THE PHOTOGRAPHS
From the Photographer's Note...
Poet Stanley Kunitz was 100 years old when he wrote in one of my favorite books, The Wild Braid, that "the body of work each artist produces is not an expression of the desire for praises or recognition...but the deepest manifestation of our gratitude for the gift of life." His words rang for me. Still do.
When I am photographing and it is working, I can feel life coursing through me. To feel so alive, wherever I may be, is the experience of being human that I cherish the most. Come be with me, the world says, drink in my wonders, let light come where there is dark. Remember, the world says, remember who you are, find your spirit in mine.
As an artist, the discipline of paying attention, being present and focused, has compelled me for years and years. Somewhere along the way I learned, too, that both going in and out of a focused state, the natural yin and yang of being, was essential to my ability to create both work and a life of joy.
In this New Year, may life, indeed, feel like a gift to you, and may the world's wonders inspire you, bring light.
